Glass Bead Jewellery
It is only when I have to consider my jewellery designs and when I visit bead fairs, that I realise just how many glass beads there are to choose from. To name a few, there are glass pearls, venetian/murano glass, lampwork beads, cane glass, opaline glass, and crystal (Czech and Swarovski). I love to work with glass that includes numerous colours and millefiori (a kind of murano glass) is my favorite. These create such fun glass necklaces that seem to appeal to all ages. I have also recently made necklaces with cane glass that is made from thin rods of drawn glass. These are such elegant and beautiful glass beads and create classy necklaces. Though I love to work with freshwater pearls, I also find that the imitation glass pearls fit the bill for those looking for inexpensive fashion jewellery. Glass pearls are shinier than the real thing, and with time their surfaces are prone to errosion.
I continue to look for beautiful glass beads to create stunning jewellery.

Colours for Fall and Winter 2010
Colours this Season for Clothes and Accessories
A good selection of brilliant colours such as sapphire blue or emerald green through to the delicate pastel colours of grey and beige can all fit into this season’s colour scheme.
Colours to look out for this Fall and winter are black (a classic!), eggplant purple, greens (especially emerald green), greys, browns (especially chocolate brown), silver, turquoise blue and deep fuchsia. Metallic coloured jewellery in gold and silver remains popular throughout the year. So there is plenty to choose from when choosing your new wardrobe!
Don’t forget the colourful diversity among the pearls, which are flaunting
themselves in remarkable variety and very often in combination with precious stones.

Jewellery Trends-general
Jewellery can have such an impact on your appearance, taking an ordinary or simple outfit into one that is outstanding. This is such an easy way to make you feel special. So how do you know what are the best ways to compliment your outfits?
With styles in fashion constantly changing, it is important to keep an eye on the jewellery trends that go hand-in-hand. High street jewellery is reasonably priced so most people can find something for their budget. This season jewellery is huge, colorful and unusual – pieces that will be remembered, those which stand out rather than just complement outfits.
The statement jewellery trend looks great and can give any outfit an instant lift. The key is to not overdo it. For example, if you are wearing a statement necklace, don't wear large earrings and a bracelet to match. Choose one large jewellery piece which will act as the feature.
Here are some other tips: if you have angular facial features, choose jewellery with angular details e.g. squares, triangles. If you have softer contoured features, choose circles and ovals for the detail. Also note that if your face shape is round, longer earrings will lengthen the face.
With such choice in the market nowadays, do not be frightened about following a specific trend….anything goes. Don’t feel inhibited to mix and match pieces. Play with colours too and have a mix! The ‘minimalist’ look is gone! Think BIG, BOLD and COLOURS.
My future blogs are going to discuss the trends for specific jewellery types, so keep reading!

Have you thought about commissioning jewellery?
Most women (and men!) do not need to be convinced about the attributes of wearing jewellery. Jewellery is a highly fashionable accessory that can add extra charm and elegance to a woman’s beauty. Apart from giving you confidence, jewellery can set you apart from others and turn an ordinary outfit into a head-turner.
Women of today want to have an exclusive look with pieces of jewellery and this has given rise to the concept of “Designer Jewellery”. Now designers craft customized styles of jewellery for individuals keeping in mind their client's taste, style, and preferences.
Design and quality of jewellery defines an individual’s taste, personality and style. We all know that women greatly differ in the way they wear jewellery. Some prefer to be discreet while others love to be flamboyant with statement pieces.
Whatever style you have and though trends change with the changing times, good quality jewellery holds good even withstanding the test of time.
How many times have we purchased that special outfit only to then realize that we now need the jewellery to match? Or how many of us have bought the necklace of our dreams, yet cannot find the earrings to match? It’s for times like these that you need to consider commissioning a piece of jewellery.
The designer will need to have some idea of the style you have in mind. I say ‘some idea’ because many clients of mine have only a vague notion of their preferences, leaving me quite nervous about it all!
Have you ever realized how many decisions are made in order to make a piece of jewellery? Here are just a few of the considerations:
Which type of materials to use? Pearls, stones, glass, metals or a combination?
Chunky or delicate?
Single or double layers?
Gold or silver components?
Plated or sterling silver?
Type of clasps or ear hooks?
Overall style? Or leave this to the designer!
Many designers will offer suggestions and may provide you with photos of ‘draft’ designs before completion of pieces. If new materials have to be ordered, I ask for a small deposit, but complete payment is only fulfilled when the customer is happy with the finished product.

Jewellery for Men
Had a request from a man to make him some stone jewellery. Putting on a different hat to think about this. Out comes the black cord! I can see men and stones going well together. Particularly the ones I use; unpolished, textured and rough! Any ideas welcome. Hope I can make something suitable that he likes!
